Transforming Literacy and Girls’ Education with Room to Read

"This year, HistFest is proud to have Room to Read as our headline charity partner. We want to help spread the word about the important work they do to increase children’s literacy and learning around the globe. Please consider supporting Room to Read's work by making a donation and telling all your friends about them."

Room to Read

Education is the solution to the world’s biggest problems—poverty, conflict, disease, intolerance, inequality and exploitation.

Education makes people safer, healthier and more self-sufficient, but despite these known benefits, far too many children around the world are denied even a basic education. The situation is even worse for girls, who face additional barriers in their pursuit of learning.

About Room to Read

Room to Read believes World Change Starts with Educated Children® transforming the lives of millions of children in low-income communities by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organisations, and governments, Room to Read helps to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and ensure girls complete secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions.

Literacy has the power to connect the world

Books and literacy have the power to connect us — to ourselves, each other and the world around us. Good stories allow us to take a few steps in somebody else’s shoes and, in doing so, to recognise our shared humanity and experience a world beyond our own.

Give the gift of education

Room to Read has helped over 16 million children in 16 countries around the world unlock their full potential through education by publishing children’s books in local languages, equipping schools with stocked libraries, training educators how to teach reading, and supporting girls throughout secondary school.

L
et’s spread joy and connection by giving the gift of books and the ability to read them. Just £35 pounds helps a child learn to read and write for a year.
